Deep Cleaning
The Procedure
A deep cleaning is called scaling and root planing (SRP). During your dental exam our hygienists can find out if you have gingivitis or periodontitis, which will determine which type of cleaning you will need to restore your oral health. If you are diagnosed with periodontitis, it means that the bacteria in your mouth has started to destroy the jaw bone that your teeth sit in. The only way to stop this disease process is to mechanically remove the bacteria off of the teeth and from underneath the gums and that's exactly what a deep cleaning is. Removing the bacteria from inside the gums will allow your body to heal those areas back up and tighten the gums around the teeth. Many times your dental provider will numb you up and split the cleanings into different sessions in order to make the process more comfortable for you.
Follow-up and periodontal maintenance
A few weeks after your deep cleaning is done your hygienist will bring you back to reevaluate how your gums have healed. A person who was treated for periodontitis will be at a higher risk for being diagnosed with this disease again so it is recommended that they have a periodontal maintenance (a cleaning) every 3-4 months.
